Regardless of the subject matter, be it a person, plant or location, my observation is one that seeks understanding. This is the only way in which I can depict each subject, reveling in the beauty of its complexity.
As a Hungarian emerging artist I have been working in various places in the world in the last couple of years which directly affects my art. Based in Honolulu since Aug 2015, as an Artist-in-Residence I have been working at my studio at UH Manoa, creating artworks of the local culture, people, the flora, the mountains, any creature of Hawaii for a year.
The professional fundament of the Central-Eastern European type of classical academical education is primarily important for me and I feel connected to the pre- and early modern masters such as Manet. I greatly appreciate Lucian Freud, and who I admire the most is Tibor Csernus. I typically have been using acrylic and charcoal mixed or by their own and simple, second-hand or preferably self-made materials which have a history.
In the past year I challenged myself and reduced my palette to the least toxic colors due to my pregnancy. In this the most crucial part was dismissing entirely all the blues other than ultramarine blue. I consider this limitation the most beneficial for realizing how one must be continuously working on her ability to adjust, not only to new places and cultures, but any new circumstances while still being able to find her integrity in it.
I believe that every ‘creature’ has its own unique character whether it is alive or not. I consider it as my job to give the most dense depiction of this very ‘personality’ with the same empathy in case of a landscape or a portrait. Nevertheless my pieces require the same sensitivity and curiosity from the beholder when it comes to fully perceiving the subtle differences in tone and color.
